I just LOVE finishing a project! This hallway project went on a little longer than I wanted it to, but in the end it all turned out perfectly and I couldn’t be happier! Who knew that when I married my husband I was also marrying a contractor?! He’s not really a contractor, but thank goodness he’s so good with projects around the house. He did everything here from start to finish – the hardwood, doors, trim, moulding, architrave, lighting – all of it! I have to give him credit – everything was finished perfectly.
As much as I hate to do it, I’ll share some sad and dreary before photos of what this space looked like before.
Our moodbaord for the project was this, and I think we actually stayed pretty close to our original concept! The only major variation came at the end – the black doors!
To start, we installed new hardwood from Alexanian – they are our go-to for hardwood flooring! We loved the hardwood we chose from them for my walk-in closet so we knew this would be a great spot to choose our hardwood for the hallway.
Our builder installed hardwood on our lower level and on our stairs, but since we were doing the upstairs hallway ourselves we needed to find the perfect match which I believe we did. There were so many little details that needed to be done to make each and every corner perfect, and it turned out amazing!
After working with Metrie interior finishings for our last project (my DREAM closet) we knew that the quality of the products were outstanding. It was a no brainer to use their products again for the hallway, especially since using the same style of door created a more cohesive look throughout the upstairs of our home.
The builder-installed doors seemed like they were made of hollow wood compared to the solid wood Metrie doors. Trust me – slamming a door in a dramatic fashion with a Metrie door is much more emphatic! It’s amazing how quiet it is in a room that has one of these doors installed. The look and feel of them gives the space such a posh feel – walking down this hallway it almost seems like I am in a chic boutique hotel rather than my home.
The doorways, the baseboards, and the crown molding are all factors in creating the wow factor to any space, and adding all of these things from Metrie really created a finished look to the space.
I am so glad my husband convinced me that we should add Metrie architrave to our doors upstairs! It makes them look so much taller! We have 9ft ceilings downstairs, but just 8ft ceiling upstairs, but it now feels like they are at the same height with the help of the architrave. We chose Metrie Fashion Forward Scene II 3 ½ MDF Architrave for our doorways.
Eight doors in total were installed upstairs, and we chose the the Metrie Fashion Forward Collection Solid Interior doors. We decided to paint them all black which I LOVE. I love how it contrasts with the white moldings and light grey walls!
We decided to do something a bit different with our linen closet. Since it’s a smaller door we decided to give it a push closure instead of a door knob, and we painted it grey to blend in with the walls. I think it’s a cute touch to the space!
Our baseboard for this project is the Metrie French Curves Scene I 5 ½ MDF Baseboard. It turns out baseboard is just like hair – the higher, the better! I can’t believe the difference between our old baseboard, and this one. The height of it brings so much detail to the space.
We chose the Metrie Fashion Forward Scene II 3 ½ MDF Casing which makes our doorways look so much more emphasized.
We kept the décor simple since the doors really are the star of the show in this space. We chose two of these white tables from Urban Barn which I blogged about here, but I’ve changed my decor plans a few times since then.
The lights are from Wayfair, and once they arrived I knew they were the perfect choice. These lights come in different finishes, but this finish complimented the colouring in the space so well. The two smaller lights combined with the larger one installed in the landing give off the perfect amount of light! I love it when I am standing outside of our home and can see the lights through the window – they are gorgeous! Wayfair has so many different options for lighting it was a difficult choice, but I truly love the choice we made.
We chose a larger light from Wayfair for the landing, and the two smaller Wayfair lights for the hallway.
Finally I chose these large 22 x 30 frames from Michaels, and although I thought I would paint them white, I stuck with the black wood they came in. I ordered large prints online from Blacks, and had them couriered to our home in 3 days! I thought the cost was very affordable for such large prints shipped in a short period of time.
Well, what do you think? You may think I’m biased since it’s MY hallway, but I love it. I think having all of these beautiful doors painted black in a light space looks incredible.
Ripping up the carpet was such a great choice – the hardwood looks so good, and it flows into our wood staircase. I think the simple décor we went with really highlights all of the beautiful Metrie moldings and interior finishings. Every corner is beautifully finished, and the hallway looks incredible compared to how it looked before with the builder finishings.
Thank you so much to all of the amazing brands who worked with us on this project – we love how this project turned out!
By the way, my dress is from Chicwish!

Thank you so much! The flooring was amazing on this project – it matched the rest of the home perfectly!
It looks amazing. It’s like a magazine photo. I would never have thought of black doors and they are just the perfect finish to the whole hallway.

Thank you so much! The black doors were a last minute decision (I’ve always wanted them, but my husband was unsure), but I am SO glad we went for it!
