Summerlicious 2014

I love opportunities where I am not responsible for making dinner. I’ll take any excuse I can to eat out in a restaurant instead of slaving away in the kitchen myself. A great excuse to try some of the best restaurants Toronto had to offer is Summerlicious. Today, July 4th is the first day and it runs until July 20th this year. Either lunch or dinner is offered at these restaurants at a fixed price which is usually well below what it would cost to eat there for a regular meal, and each meal is three-courses.

If you are interested in trying it out this year, I’ve mentioned some of my favourite restaurants included in Summerlicious below. That way if you don’t like dinner you have someone to blame! Just joking – they are all excellent restaurants worth giving a try. Here is a link to the Summerlicious website to see all of your choices.

Bosk
Shangri-La Hotel Toronto
188 University Ave

Bosk

I recently posted about my great experience at this restaurant. They describe their food as Canadian, and their flashy champagne cart and attention to detail on each plate wowed me. Check out my review here.

$25 Lunch, $45 Dinner

Canoe
66 Wellington St W, 54th Floor, Toronto Dominion Bank Tower

image

I tried Canoe out one Winterlicious a couple years ago because I wasn’t sure I could afford it not during one of the “liscious” events! Canoe is expensive, but it has an amazing view of the city, and critics say it’s one of Canada’s best restaurants. This is one of the most popular choices of Summerlicious, and they only have availability on Monday the 7th!

Lunch $25, Dinner $45

Cibo Wine Bar
522 King St W

image

This trendy restaurant on the lively King West strip has some very ……interesting art in the basement, but the menu is very simple and offers traditional Italian food.

Lunch $15, Dinner $25

Fabbrica
49 Karl Fraser Rd

image

Fabbrica is not cheap, but they back up their prices with good food. The location is one of my favourites as its a part of the outdoor mall Shops at Don Mills. If you really like your dinner it’s likely you can pick up another one at Mark McEwan’s grocery store across the road to take home! They have lots of pre-packaged meals which are searched at all of McEwan’s restaurants across Toronto

Lunch $20, Dinner $35

La Société
131 Bloor St W

image

This Yorkville French restaurant is gorgeous. It’s like stepping into a restaurant in Paris. When I ate there for Summerlicious last year I loved that oysters were an appetizer option! My meal was perfect, and patio is great for people watching.

Lunch $20, Dinner $35

Lee
601 King St W

image

Lee (named after the Chef Susur Lee) is all about Asian and French food in family style portions. We had to make a 9pm reservation just to get not this restaurant, but the sushi was totally worth it!

Dinner $45

Weslodge
480 King St W

image

This saloon-style restaurant has a lot heads on the wall, and a lot of crazy drinks on the menu! It’s a packed bar at night, and I snacked on a scotch egg (my first one – very tasty!) and a “pastrami”-style sandwich which was made with bison, but really did taste like pastrami. I don’t know, maybe it WAS pastrami and they lied to me. Anyway, it was really good – and fun!

Lunch $20, Dinner $45

Stock
Trump International Hotel & Tower
325 Bay St, 31st Floor

image

Stock has their own chocolate lab, and they have special mini leather chairs to hold your purse. Does it get any more amazing than that? Stock is in the 31st floor so the views are amazing, and they even have a patio.

Lunch $25, Dinner $45

Glamping at Long Point Eco-Adventures

Long Point Eco-Adventures

I am so not a camper. I’m more of a hotel-hopper, or a resort connoisseur. I’m pretty sure the last handful of times I went camping I ended the trip with the words “I am never doing THAT again”. I do really enjoy fun outdoor activities; sitting outside drinking and laughing with friends, boating, biking and getting away from the city, so I can definitely see the appeal of camping. This past weekend I stayed at Long Point Eco-Adventures, chosen based on the fact that they advertised a “glamping” experience. What is glamping? Well, it’s how I camp now! Not only are the accommodations impressive, but the whole site itself and activities offered were packaged perfectly for a selective outdoorsy person such as myself.

Long Point Eco-Adventures is located in St. Williams, which is a short distance from Port Dover, Ontario. The adventure site includes 15 Wilderness Suites which include either a King or Queen bed (or two queen beds in a double suite), a private bathroom with a sink, toilet, and an outdoor shower, hot and cold running water, hardwood floors, a sliding glass locking door, a private deck, electrical outlets, and a fridge. That’s right – a fridge! I was pretty amazed with our suite when we saw it. It had tons of room for all of the stuff I brought (why do I seem to pack the same amount of luggage for one night as one week?), and the room even came with fluffy white towels and robes. The electrical outlets were great for charging our phones, and there was even an alarm clock. It was truly like staying in a hotel room. It was such a relief to have a real bathroom! And a very nice one too! The room was also outfitted with a large fan, a heater and an electric blanket for chilly nights.

Long Point did an excellent job with keeping the tents very clean as well. I thought with it being the outdoors and all there would be bugs inside the tent, but there wasn’t one mosquito inside and the floors and bathroom were so clean. It was probably cleaner than some hotels I have stayed at.

Our private deck had two Muskoka chairs and a citronella candle, and our view was of a small forested area which dropped off into a very steep ravine. Through the trees you could see the lake in the distance.

Long Point Eco-Adventures offers lots of activities on site as well. There is an intense zip-lining course which we were told takes around 2.5 hours with 8 zip lines, 2 suspension bridges, 13 platforms, and it ends with a 40 foot rappel. We were only there one night, but we vowed that when we return we would try that for sure!

There were also mountain biking tours, kayak tours, kayak sport fishing excursions, and zodiac boat tours. If you aren’t into anything that extreme there are also nature trails you can walk on your own. It’s really hard to be bored at this place!

The excursion that we tried was the Stargazing Tour at the Observatory. The Long Point Observatory is pretty impressive. It’s actually a dome where you can stargaze from different platforms, and their scope sits at the top of the dome (the dome even rotates). To be honest, I didn’t really expect much from this portion of our trip. I thought it would be something easy to do to kill some time. It turned out to be my favourite part of the trip! The tour started at 10pm, and one of the guides took us through a quick presentation to teach us some basics about the sky. It’s been a long time since I’ve studied the solar system, so I actually really enjoyed this part (did you know Pluto is no longer a planet? I totally missed it getting mean-girled out of the solar system planet club, but apparently that happened), and it helped a lot with the rest of the tour. We split into two groups and each group had a very knowledgeable guide. I know they were knowledgeable because I had some very serious 20/20-style rounds of questioning for them, and they answered all of my questions with ease.

Through the scope we saw Saturn, a galaxy, a dead star, and things that were thousands of light years away. It’s hard to explain how impressive it all was – it’s really something I suggest you experience yourself! We learned all about the constellations (my only recommendation to this tour was some accompanying music – I felt like The Tragically Hip’s Bobcaygeon would have been very fitting at this point), and the stories of how they came to be named. This tour was about an hour and a half, and I loved it!

At Long Point you don’t even have to light your own fire. There is a communal fire pit that everyone can enjoy, and it’s lit at the request of the campers each night. We decided to sit on our deck with some drinks and music to end our night. The property is private, so you can freely drink without ducking from the forest rangers.

Are you ready for the best part? There is a winery across the street! How amazing is that? There was an easy path to follow across the street to Buring Kiln Winery where you could enjoy wine tasting, or eat on the patio at their gourmet food truck. We made two trips over to the winery, and the patio was amazing! We made a reservation previously (I would recommend this for dinner – the patio was full) and had a nice dinner while enjoying live music. Dinner was pretty impressive considering it came from a food truck! They used real cutlery and plates, and they offered things like fish tacos (I had this – it was delish), pulled pork filled crepes wrapped in prosciutto, and they even had desserts like a flourless brownie. They had glueten-free options as well. The wine was very good as well, and a bottle of Reisling only cost us $19.95 which had me very happy!

Breakfast was included in the cost of our stay, and it was served in a main tent on site. It included scrambled eggs, bacon, yogurt, oatmeal, toast, coffee and juice. The bacon and eggs were made by some of the staff, and the rest was on a serve yourself basis.

Long Point Eco-Adventures

Overall we had an awesome time, and we are excited to go back! We only stayed one night, and we all agreed to take everything in two nights would be best. The only problem is that I will never do a regular camping trip again. Glamping is totally the way to go. There was staff on site at all times in case you needed something (they even offered to bring your luggage straight to your tent), the office housed a gift shop and sold refreshments and popcicles, and there was even free Wi-Fi.

Long Point Eco-Adventures is located at 1730 Front Road, St. Williams, ON N0E 1P0. Check them out on their website at http://www.lpfun.ca

Summer Reading Material!

Gone Girl

Do you remember getting ready to leave on a vacation and making sure to pack some carefully selected books and magazines to lazily read while tanning? I remember those days. If you still have those days, cherish them. I followed the same tradition while packing for our first vacation to the Bahamas when our son was 7 months old. I found some great books at Chapters that I couldn’t wait to read on the beach since life at home seemed too hectic to get any reading done.

By the end of the vacation the most use those books had was to act as a weight in my beach bag. Reading with a small child around? I don’t know what I was thinking. It was almost as silly as when my husband packed himself a bunch of magazines for our hospital stay for our son’s birth. Didn’t he know he would be busy running around doing everything I asked? I did just give birth to his first born child, so it didn’t take me long to cash in on the you-owe-me-for-life-for-having-your-baby angle.

Now that things are a bit more manageable (I didn’t say less hectic, it’s just easier to manage the chaos), I’ve had an easier time keeping up on my reading. I always have a novel on the go, and sometimes two. Yesterday I picked up Gone Girl, which I am excited to read before the movie comes out.

Here are a few of my recommended summer reads for when you actually have five minutes to yourself this summer!

The Night Circus

The Night Circus By Erin Morgenstern
I avoided reading this one for a long time, but I kept seeing it over and over again on people’s lists of must-reads. The idea of reading about the circus didn’t interest me, but once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. Highly addictive, and dare I say, a must-read!

The Paris Wife

The Paris Wife By Paula McLain
I really knew very little about Ernest Hemmingway until I read this book centered around his first wife, Hadley Richardson. The book focuses on their lives in the 1920’s while living in Paris, and the story of their marriage is pretty unbelievable. And frustrating. Very frustrating. You may do some yelling at Hadley. Oh, and it will make you want to go to Paris.

Before I go to Sleep

Before I go to Sleep By S.J. Watson
This one was a bit frustrating, but I found myself racing to the end to figure out what was going on. Every morning Christine wakes up not knowing who she is, who her husband is, and why she cannot remember anything. It’s one of those books where you are screaming at the character to figure it out!

FURIOUS LOVE

Furious Love By Sam Kashner & Nancy Schoenberger
Love love love this book! It’s about the love life of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and I think I’ve read it at least three times. Their life together was so unbelievable.

Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

This story jumps from present to past, and is a little on the sad side, but it’s a very good read. It sort of haunts you when you are done, which means it’s a great story!

Life

Life by Keith Richards
I love biographies. I read some pretty obscure one’s too, but this one was pretty appealing because wouldn’t you think Keith Richards had an interesting life? He did, I can confirm it. It’s a great read, and his life was as crazy as you would imagine.
