Update on My Interac 21 Day Credit-Free Challenge!

I previously told you all about the Interac 21 Day Credit-Free Challenge, and how I was taking the challenge myself to put the credit cards away and only use my InteracDebit card.

Apparently it only takes 21 days to change a habit, and I have been putting that statement to the test!

It’s felt really good to get this far in the challenge and only use my InteracDebit card. Why does it feel so good? I am only using the money I have to spend – there is no credit card bill that will haunt me in 30 days to remind me of my past purchases.

I really put myself to the test recently during the challenge I went on a small trip to Prince Edward County with my family. There was shopping, food and just general touristy activities that went outside of my daily spending routine. My habits while on vacation usually include swiping my credit card for this or that along the way because I just tend to spend more when I’m on a trip then I would in my daily life. It’s like I am taking a vacation from being responsible and buying whatever I feel like in the moment because I am “on vacation” I seem to tell myself.

For me, restaurants are often the spot I need to remember debit is the best way to go! Everywhere I went it was so easy to pay with debit instead of credit because everywhere I went had wireless debit machines that went straight to our table. Usually I think it’s so easy to swipe a credit card, but in this case it was just as easy (and better for my wallet) to use my InteracDebit card!

For this trip I was determined to make sure I stayed within the challenge and only use my InteracDebit Card. You know what, it actually wasn’t that hard! Even in wine country where there we so many antique shops and rustic restaurants, InteracDebit was accepted everywhere I went! It was so funny to drive up to an antique-filled barn in the middle of nowhere and see them pull out an InteracDebit machine. I was sure there wouldn’t be one in sight, but I was able to use it everywhere we went!

Using my InteracDebit card on the trip forced me to keep within budget, but also insured a guilt-free vacation. I didn’t need to worry about spending more than I had – I spend exactly what I had, and what I planned to spend. It was much easier than I thought it would be, and it felt really good.

For me, the challenge continues! I will update you at the end of the 21 days to let you know if I made it to the end without any slip ups, and about what challenges I faced.

What I Learned about RESP’s + Grow Your RESP with RBC Contest

RBC RESP TWitter Party

A couple weeks ago I participated in the RBC RESP Twitter Party. Have you ever participated in a Twitter Party yourself?

They can be fast paced, but they are very easy to join. There is a hashtag that you can follow along with where you can see questions asked and answered by experts, and participating can often lead to giveaways and prizes. They are pretty fun, and a lot of your questions can be easily answered!

If you are ever shy about asking questions, or in some cases don’t know who to ask, a Twitter party is a great way to learn more about something from experts in that field.

In this case, I had all of my RESP questions answered by RBC. Some of the most frequent, and most insightful questions were ones that I hadn’t even thought of!

For example, when the RESP is withdrawn, who pays the taxes?

If the student is enrolled in post secondary education, they pay the tax. I had no idea!

One of my biggest questions was what happens to an RESP if a child decides not to pursue postsecondary education?

The plan can remain open for 36 years. Upon cancellation, you could transfer money to a sibling or rollover to your own RRSP. I had always wondered what would happen if my son decided not to attend postsecondary schooling! If your child decides not to go to university, the original contribution can be withdrawn and wouldn’t be taxed, and earnings in the plan could go over to your RRSP; grants money must be repaid.

If you missed the Twitter party, and your questions were not answered in my re-cap, then you can ask questions and learn more about RESPs from your local RBC branch, or visit them at http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/save-regularly/resp.html!

Right now RBC is running a great contest called Grow your RESP with RBC Contest!

Your have a chance to win 1 of 4 prizes of $500 to put towards your won RESP. The contest ends October 4, 2015. Enter here!

Our Visit to the Drake Devonshire with a Toddler in Tow

Our Visit to the Drake Devonshire with a Toddler in Tow

Every fall we love to plan a getaway as a last hurrah of summer. We love to travel when the crowds have died down for back to school, the weather is still warm but a little chillier at night, and the leaves are starting to change. We thought that this year the perfect getaway would be to The Drake Devonshire in Prince Edward County.

In the past we have loved travelling to Niagara-on-the-Lake for wine touring, and to enjoy a break in a town where things aren’t quite as busy as at home. This year we decided to do some wine touring in Prince Edward County instead, but we decided to focus more on the “getaway” aspect of the trip by bringing along our toddler.

The Drake Devonshire is located in a small town called Wellington, and when I say small, I mean it doesn’t take long to drive through it. Downtown consists of a grocery store, a couple restaurants and stores, and of course The Drake. It’s situated right on the water, and the area is beautiful.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, and the hotel was full for the night, and the restaurant was buzzing even though it was after lunch and just snacks and drinks were being served. The Drake Devonshire was the most popular place to be in the area, and it was easy to understand why once inside.

The hotel is comprised of only 11 rooms and two suites, all very unique in their own way. Walking into the front entrance we were met at the front desk by Brandy who was happy to check us in (early too!) and give us details on the grounds and amenities. A small, carefully curated General Store was also in the lobby full of gifts and things you likely left on the bathroom counter, forgotten in the rush of getting everyone out the door.

We walked up the stairs to the third floor where only our room was situated – we actually had a private floor. Our room was amazing, and I mean AMAZING! For those of you who have travelled with toddlers before, you know the key to not going to bed at 8pm with your child is having separate bedrooms. Not only did we have two separate bedrooms, but two separate bathrooms, a balcony, and a common room joining them! It was the perfect set up. Each room had it’s own T.V., desk, mini bar, bathroom, set of robes, phone and it’s own individual décor.

We let our son pick his room for the night, and we relaxed from our drive (it took us about an hour and a half from Whitby to arrive at the hotel) by watching T.V. and snacking on the unbelievable popcorn left as a welcome gift in both of our rooms.

Waiting for us in our welcome package were the details of our stay, amenity information, and although I had booked dinner at the restaurant through OpenTable, my reservation information was included in our details. Impressive!

The décor was very eclectic and included oil paintings updated with bright additions like castles and dragons in each picture throughout the room.

The hotel had it’s own games room called the Glass Box which was, well, a glass box! It allowed you to enjoy the beautiful view of the trees around the hotel you while you played ping pong, enjoyed music, or played one of the many games provided in the room.

We were in here for quite a bit while our son looked through all of the games and played some ping pong!

Next door was the fireplace room with leather couches, books, and a fireplace that was lit the whole time we were there. It was the perfect spot to have an after dinner glass of wine, and a great spot to keep an eye on our son while he played in the games room. This was also where you could have a morning coffee or tea as it was set up in the same room and included in our stay.

On our first day we spent some time touring a few nearby wineries (there were quite a few very close – only a couple minutes away!), and then we settled in for the evening with our first visit to the restaurant at The Drake Devonshire. Thank goodness we had a reservation – on a Sunday night the place was jam packed.

The service was perfect – we had a kids menu and the offer of having our son’s food come out first so he wasn’t waiting. We enjoyed a few of the signature cocktails, and our son was treated like a grown up by our server who was very sweet.

He enjoyed a glass of milk and a burger and french fries, while we enjoyed the Popcorn Shrimp, the Tomato + Sheeps Milk Cheese Salad and their AMAZING Lobster Rolls. The atmosphere was loud with conversation, which was perfect for us with a child who loves to drive trucks at the table with some serious sound effects at times.

The view of the lake was beautiful beside our table, and after dinner the screened in porch was available with a fireplace for a nightcap, or the deck and beach were well lit for a drink outside.

With all of the commotion in the restaurant it was surprising we didn’t hear a thing when we went upstairs to turn in for the night. Our son was tucked in cozy in his room (we loved that he had his own bathroom in his room for those middle-of-the-night emergencies), and we closed his door and headed to our own room.

We had the option of ordering a DVD player to our room with DVD’s, but we found a movie on TV and happily ate a lot of popcorn. It was perfect! Filtered water was provided in the room as well so we really didn’t need to leave. The minibar included Prince Edward County wine, alcohol, mixers, and all kinds of snacks.

The next morning we headed back to the restaurant because the food was just too amazing, and we enjoyed the perfect breakfast with the sun shining and a beautiful view outside.

We spent some time on the grounds hanging out by the beach, playing some of the games outside, and just enjoying the scenery. It really is a beautiful spot.

The rest of our day was spent in the neighbouring town of Picton shopping around, and at a few antique shops (there are some great ones in the area, including one called Dead People Things – what a name), and of course visiting some great wineries!

The staff were great and always made a point to see how our stay was going as we passed the front desk for our next adventure, and made a point to speak to our son like he was a grown up (which I am sure he appreciated!). We never felt like he was unwelcomed – actually, on the contrary! With a kids menu in the restaurant, and checking in with the staff knowing that the room ready for us was perfect for a family with a toddler by having two bedrooms, The Drake Deveonshire really seemed to want us to have a great stay with our son. And we did!

Our son loved the trip, and he actually still talks about it a lot!

Oversized Camel Coloured Vest: Sirens, also found here and here | Black Skinny Jeans: H&M | Lace Up Heels: Zaful | Bag: Louis Vuitton

I had been looking for a vest or jacket in this great camel colour for a long time, and was so excited when I finally found it! This vest is everything. I love the length, the cut that gives the illusion of ruffles, and you won’t believe the price. It was $29.99! It’s a great warm fabric and looks great, and for that price I was a very happy shopper. I was very surprised where I found it as well – the Sirens store at Yorkdale!

I often pick up sweaters in the winter at Sirens, but not often dress clothes like this. It’s the perfect fall vest to keep me warm and cozy, and on a sunny day like this when I was wearing it I was cool enough when it was warm in the afternoon since it was a vest. I am sure I can layer a long sleeved shirt or sweater for the cooler months as well.

And… this is my new favourite outfit! You will probably see me in it a few times this fall and winter. I really hope I can find a great jacket this winter in the same colour!

Review of Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream

Review of Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream

I was so excited when my first Influencer Laneige VoxBox arrived a couple weeks ago! I was totally new to the Laneige beauty line, and with the cooler fall weather my skin has been in need of some serious hydration. I was lucky enough to receive the Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream to test and review, and I was excited to see the results of the product!

Sephora carries Laneige products online, and soon you will be able to find them in-store as well in Canada.

What was this product supposed to do?

It’s a gel cream that immerses skin in moisture for 24 hours. My skin has completely dried out since the weather has been a bit chillier, so I was excited to see how this cream would work.

The cream is formulated without parabens and phthalates, it’s dermatologist tested, and Laneige does not test ingredients or products on animals.

Laneige Laboratories harness a skin-perfecting mineral water clinically proven to hydrate, protect and revitalize individual skin types in their products.

At first glance the container itself is a soothing blue that pretty much screams hydration based on looks alone. The cream is very lightweight, and is scented. It smells really good to me – I suppose it would depend on who was using it if they liked that it was scented or not, but I thought it had a great scent!

Review of Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream

A little goes a long way with this product, and I feel like it will last quite a long time. It’s very lightweight, and since it’s a gel cream it does feel a little wet when you apply it, but I found it dried nicely. I was worried about wearing it under makeup, but it didn’t make my skin oily at all. My makeup stayed in place, and the cream did a great job of keeping my skin hydrated.

Review of Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream

I have noticed my chin and around my eyebrows getting a little dry lately, but from the first day I applied this gel cream that problem seemed solved! The dry skin was gone, and I was very happy with the moisture this cream provided.

Personally I like to apply it first thing in the morning, and at night after I washed my face, so it’s hard to determine if it moisturized for 24 hours, but I can attest that it kept my skin moisturized as long as I wore it.

With the weather only getting colder, I am looking forward to trying out more of the Laneige group of products in the future.

For more information visit the Laneige website here, and shop the brand on Sephora’s website here.
