My Experience with the NuFace Facial Treatment at Masion Blanc Day Spa

The other morning I was feeling a little depressed with all of this cold weather and my severe lack of Vitamin D.  I tried to remedy the situation with a little online spring shopping, but I still felt a little blah.  I thought what I needed was a spa visit to boost my morale.

I intended on booking a scalp massage, which I had heard was a bit of a life-changing 30 minutes.  Based on my self-prescribed winter depression I felt like I needed a little extra something so I randomly chose a facial to try as well.  I’m not really a facial girl.  What I mean by that is there are some people who swear by and have a facial done on a regular schedule.  I am one of those other people who usually books a facial once every couple of years.  It’s just never high on my priority list.  I chose what was called a SkinFit Facial without really knowing what that meant!  I saw that it was dubbed “Pilates for your face” and I immediately thought, crap, was I supposed to be working out my face this whole time too?  So in order to catch up on some lost time, I booked this facial and a scalp massage at Maison Blanc Day Spa in Whitby.

Maison Blanc is one of my go-to places for manicures and pedicures, so I knew I would be in good hands (literally) for my massage and facial.  My facial began with an exfoliation (this was much-needed – I always forget to do this, and it’s so important), and then I was ready for the NuFACE portion of the SkinFit facial.  NuFACE uses microcurrent and LED light which is a low-level, soft wave therapy.  The device has two prongs which are gently run along your face, and the soft waves help to firm, tone and lift your skin.  We started at a medium level, and I could not feel the waves at all.  It just felt like someone was running something soft across my face.  This is what had me a little skeptical – if I couldn’t feel this thing working, then was it really working?  I did feel a bit of a tingle the closer the facialist was to my eye area, but it was nothing that I would say hurt or even annoyed me at all.  She worked on my forehead and brow area, and below my cheek bones.  My facialist explained that for best results this should be done a couple times a week, but for a pick-me-up this can be done periodically like I was doing.

My service was completed with a deep hydrating treatment and a powerful antioxidant protection, and then a hydrating mast was put on while I enjoyed my scalp massage.  Can I just tell you how amazing a scalp massage is?  Why don’t we do this more often?!  I always think to treat myself I will get a massage, but what about my poor neglected head!  I am always pulling on my hair – blow-drying it, styling it, straightening it, curling it, or spraying it down with something – it obviously needs a bit of TLC.  The massage was amazing!  It made me so relaxed I got a little sleepy.  I thought that having the scalp massage and the facial was the perfect combo.

As for the results with the NuFACE system, I really wish I thought to take a before and after picture!  I didn’t expect to blog about this, but after seeing and feeling the results I was pretty impressed and knew I had to share!  There was a significant difference in how my cheekbones looked, and above my brows.  I just looked much fresher, and things seemed a bit more lifted.  I don’t usually do a lot of anti-aging treatments, and I really just thought this would be fun, but it’s definitely something I would do again.  It really made me look like a had a weekend full of sleep and relaxation, and it only took about 30 minutes to achieve it!  I think I would do this again before a special event or a wedding, because the results truly lasted a couple days, and it really made my face look refreshed and healthy.  The next morning my face wasn’t sore, but it did feel like I had done some sort of workout on it the day before.  It felt like it had been massaged, and it was actually a good feeling.

Maison Blanc actually sells the NuFACE system at their spa for home use.  The SkinFit Facial was $50, and you can just have your brow area done for $15.  You can add this to any service for $30, which is what I opted for.

My Favourite Boyfriend Jeans

Yesterday I made one of those fun purchases that made me excited to go home and try it on with as many outfit combinations as possible.

I’ve wanted a pair of boyfriend jeans for a long time, and I finally found the perfect pair! Well they aren’t exactly boyfriend jeans, but I found a way to make the fit work! They are Hi-Rise Jegging Crop from American Eagle, but I bought them a size up so they sit on my hips and have a baggy boyfriend jean fit.

My Review of Cafe Boulud at the Four Seasons Toronto

logo

For my first visit to the Four Seasons in Yorkville a couple months ago I had cocktails and food at D|Bar, which is the the hotel’s lower level lounge and bar. I was there on a Monday night and found the place jam packed! There was a DJ playing music (at a very tolerable level so I could hear the person I was speaking with which was a huge bonus), and a special that night which was a glass of wine and charcuterie platter for $30. I actually got to meet the hotel’s charcuterie expert who handles all of the meat curing for the restaurant which was pretty impressive.

This visit to D|Bar prompted me to try the restaurant upstairs – Cafe Boulud.  I am by no means a food critic, but I am going to attempt to explain to you what I ate, and how much I enjoyed it!

The restaurant itself is actually much more comfortable than I anticipated.  At some of the other high end hotels in Toronto I’ve found that the restaurants tend to feel like you are eating in a hotel.  Of course you ARE eating in a hotel, but when you are having dinner its good to feel like you are enjoying the ambiance the restaurant should have to offer.  Although Cafe Boulud is a very spacious restaurant, it felt like our table was very cozy surrounded by banquet seating that lined the room.  It may have helped that it was a very busy night!  The restaurant has a loft design so the music from the bar below spilled into the restaurant.

Without planning it we visited the restaurant on the last night of Winterlicious, so we decided to give the limited offer menu a try.

I started with the Venison Pâté, which included gin jelly, pickled young juniper and country bread.  After my experience at D|Bar I knew that I would enjoy this appetizer.  It was presented in a very interesting way, but every bite of the venison was paired perfectly with jelly and picked juniper.

My partner in crime had the Smoked Haddock Chowder which was made with cured pork belly, haddock salad, celery and a potato crisp.  I had to try this because the smell was amazing.  I actually ended up eating half of this soup which had a bit of a kick to it.

Next up I tried the Celeriac Agnolotti, made with brown butter, apple compote and celery emulsion.  I tried this based on the opinion of our server who said this vegetarian option was one of his favourites.  I was pretty worried about this dish because it truly sounded like something I had never tried before.  It ended up being the best pasta I have ever had!  I think it was the brown butter that really had me sold, but I truly loved every bite and ate it embarrassingly quickly (which my date was quick to point out).  I am a meat lover so I was worried a vegetarian option wouldn’t be what I wanted, but it’s been a week and a half since I had this pasta and I’m still craving it!

The Braised Beef Shin was cooked to perfection.  It was falling of the bone, but unfortunately my date only gave me the opening bite and suddenly he realized he had eaten it all without offering me another taste.  His performance almost had me fooled, but I’m pretty sure he just wanted to save it all for himself.  His mock horror at not offering me another bite seemed a little suspect.

The finale to this dinner for myself was the Caramelized Pear Sundae with anise tuile, caramel sauce and calvados ice cream.

I also tried some of the Coffee and Cardamom Sundae with espresso gelato, chocolate sablé, and cardamom foam.  I am not a huge coffee fan so I only had a couple bites of this, but for me the coffee flavour was not too overwhelming which was perfect.

The portions for this dinner were much larger than I expected.  By the time I finished my dinner I wasn’t sure I would have room for dessert. Dessert ended up being huge, and I couldn’t even finish it!

Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu which was great because since most of it was French, and I needed a bit of translation assistance!  He had tried everything on the menu which was very helpful in assisting me choose what I wanted for dinner.  I hate it when you ask the server what their recommendations are, and they make all kinds of excuses as to why they don’t have a favourite or haven’t had time to try the menu.  Our server knew the Winterlicious and regular menu inside and out.  He also had some great wine recommendations as well to pair with our dinner.

Finishing off the meal with an expresso

Finishing off the meal with an expresso

Overall we loved our dinner and would be happy to return to try more of the menu.  Valet parking is only $15 when you eat or drink at D|Bar or Cafe Boulud, which is the best rate I’ve seen in Yorkville for valet.  Our car was ready and warm by the time we went downstairs for the restaurant, and overall everything was very easy.  Our reservation had us sit down for dinner without even a short wait, dinner was amazing and the service was perfectly timed, and after paying and grabbing our coats we walked straight out to our awaiting car.  The menu prices are definitely higher-end, but the Winterlicous option was a great way to sample the menu while leaving more in our wallets at the end of the night.

Kids Fashion in Toronto from Whistlekids

logo_black

Lately, kids clothing has been my obsession. I love to shop for myself, but there is something very satisfying in dressing my mini-me as fashion forward as possible. I have a boy, so that is even more of a challenge. I do shop at Old Navy and Gap for the basics, but there are really only so many outfits with teddy bears and dinosaur’s one child can have. Why should I buy the latest trends for myself and leave my favourite person on the planet wearing something that doesn’t represent his rocker personality with a side of uber coolness?

Enter Whistlekids – this store carries brands that other stores in Toronto do not, and it’s filled with items I kept saying to myself that I wished was in my size.

They even have mini Hudson jeans for girls, and Brian Lichtenberg Homies sweatshirts and tee’s – a favourite of Miley Cyrus.

The design of the store is bright and modern, and the back of the store has room for children’s change rooms and even a play area for children.

006

004

For the boys, there are funky bibs, ties, bow ties, fedoras, and fun pacifier clips. For the girls there are toy wands, hairbands, tutus and costume jewelry. Everything seems unique to what you would normally find in a children’s clothing store, and everything has a fashionable flair.

My favourites included the YYZ LAX t-shirt by Dilascia I picked up for my son, the comfy and stretchy striped pants by electrik kidz, and the electrik kidz bandana I plan to use as a bib for my son.

Eventually the store will carry merchandise online which is a great bonus, and I was given a sneak peak at the look book of some of the clothing the store will be bringing in soon and it’s to die for. Incoming kids harem pants and other funky prints and patterned clothing already has shoppers on a waiting list for their arrival.

Whistlekids is located at 1693 Avenue Road in Toronto, or you can check them out online at www.whistlekids.com
