My Top Book Picks for 2017

It usually doesn’t take me long to finish a good book! Some I finish in two days, some I take my time (depending on how busy or how tired I am) but I always have a book on the go! Some I buy in paperback or hardcover, and some I add to my Amazon Kindle.

I think my tastes are pretty varried when it comes to choosing a book! Some are just for fun like The Nest, but on the other hand I LOVE reading biographies.

I read a few different series this year including the Crazy Rich Asians series, and the Outlander books. The Outlander series took me a while because they are very long, but I LOVED them!

Sometimes I have a really hard time choosing what to read. Just this past weekend it took me almost an hour to choose two books, which gave me the idea for this post. Below I’ve added a few of my favourite reads from this year. Maybe it will help you save some time when choosing what to read next yourself!

Great picks, Mandy! I read and loved Jason Priestley’s memoir last year. I worked with him a few years ago in postproduction and I truly admire his dedication to his craft.

Here are the books I read and loved in 2017:

You Will Not Have My Hate by Antoine Leiris, translated from French by Sam Taylor.
Leiris’s wife, Hélène was killed by terrorists while attending a rock concert at the Bataclan theater in Paris. Leiris was left to care for his seventeen-month-old son. Days after the attacks, he shared an open letter to his wife’s killers on Facebook.

With grace, honesty, and vulnerability, he shares the story of his grief and struggle in the days and weeks after his wife’s murder. A gorgeously written, incredibly moving memoir about love, loss, and our power to choose love over hate.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman. Absolutely loved it and can’t stop recommending it!

Around the Way Girl by Taraji P. Henson. I devoured this memoir in a Sunday afternoon. I laughed out loud, cried legit tears and walked away changed from having read it.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. One of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s a story that needed to be told and Thomas tells it with honesty, intelligence, and passion. I still think about it.

Exit, Pursued by a Bear by E.K. Johnston. This is an engaging and devastating, yet empowering and hopeful story about the captain of a high school cheerleading team who is raped at summer camp. Johnston focuses on how she deals with the aftermath and fights to regain control of her life with the support of family, friends and therapy. Beautifully written, thought provoking, and necessary.

What To Say Next by Julie Buxbaum. I fell in love with this YA novel. A must-read!

Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf. Haruf is one of my favourite authors. This one is told in plain English and it’s a story about love, companionship, grief, and second chances.

Fractured by Catherine McKenzie. The story is brilliantly structured and packed with twist after twist. You know something horrible has happened, but you don’t know exactly what or to whom. I read it from cover to cover in one weekend.

    Currently reading and loving:

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
A Mother’s Reckoning by Sue Klebold
    Reading People by Anne Bogel

    Happy reading!
