For the last couple months we have been working on a super exciting project at home, and I’m so excited to share our progress on it so far with you! Actually we are much further along, but we have been so busy with the end of summer and back to school that I had to take a beat and finally share some progress with you!
We decided to transform my walk-in closet from ordinary to polished and much more organized! The hardest part so far? Relocating all of my clothes! I have never shared a closet with anyone in my life, so I’ve not only had to take over my husband’s closet (we could call it sharing, but it’s really not since I took up ALL of the space), but I’ve also invaded two other closets and three racks in the basement. I can’t even talk about where my poor shoes are right now (let’s just say they look lonely), so I’ve been at my hubby to finish everything soon!
If you follow me on Snapchat you may have already seen the before shots (@sparkleshinylove), but here are a few shots to show you what it looked like before we removed the custom racks we previously had installed.
As you can see my clothing had room to breathe, but after years of having everything exposed I was ready to put things behind closed doors. Step one was to rip everything off of the walls, and remove all of my clothing and shoes!
We decided that we wanted to install a hardwood floor in the room, so we ripped up the carpet and got to work.
My super-husband installed this beautiful floor from Alexanian. I really wanted a grey hardwood floor, and let me tell you that it was not easy to find! We tried a few of the big box stores and found that grey flooring wasn’t often real hardwood, and instead it was often laminate meant to look like hardwood. We wanted the real thing, so we headed to Alexanian because we heard that it was more of a spot for stylists and decorators who wanted to work with different materials. I am in love with this new floor – it’s perfect. And of course I had to test out my new shoes on it!
Next up we painted the room with a CIL color called The Plaza. I have to admit, I was partial to the color because of the name and the reference to the NYC hotel (I felt like it was meant-to-be for a luxurious closet), and I think the colour will really off-set the white closet system we have coming in. We left two walls without fresh paint since they will be covered from floor to ceiling with the closet system.
Finally we were able to start some of our interior finishings with the frames, baseboard and doors. At this point in the project my husband started using Metrie finishing pieces before the closet system installation began. Here is what I love about Metrie – their interior finishing products make rooms look epic. We found that their products were so important that we actually started with choosing these items before we finished planning the room! The baseboards, crown molding, window and door casings, and the doors are what is going to create a cohesive look in the room, so selecting them was very important to this project.
We chose the Pretty Simple Scene II 5 1/4″ Oak Baseboard because the style matched the rest of the house, but it’s twice the height of our other baseboards and is also much thicker. We still went with the theme of our home, but since this room is going to be pretty extraordinary, we thought the finishing touches should be too!
The window and door casings that we chose are called Fashion Forward Scene II 3 1/2″ MDF Casing, and again they are similar to the style in our home already, but are larger and add an extra bit of emphasis to each corner of the room. Our home is only 5 years old so we had builder finishes in the house – it’s indescribable the difference in the Metrie products compared to what we had.
Ok, that’s all you get – I’m stopping here! In a couple weeks I will share where we are at next. Just wait until you see the gorgeous Metrie doors we have for the room! After our next project update I will show you the final reveal a few weeks later!
Until then if you feel it’s necessary, take a moment of silence for my lonely shoes piled up in my cold lonely basement. I visit them often to cheer them up, but they are not happy. I told my husband he’d better finish this project soon before I start buying duplicates since we are at an epic level of disorganization!
Items in this post may have been provided to me for review, but all opinions are fabulously my own!
“Closet”? We would call that a room here in Spain ;)!

That’s a bedroom here. I need your closet adn can’t wait to see what it looks like when done.
Author
Haha yes it was a bedroom – I needed a lot of space!
That’s a huge closet. I like the simplicity, good choice on the flooring, it looks more beautiful with wood than it did when you had the carpet. I’m sure it’s going to look even more lovely once you guys are done!
Author
Thank you! I think the floor makes a huge difference!
I am totally jealous of all your space! We have ZERO closets in our house…apparently people in the 1800’s didn’t need space for clothing. We have a lot of armoires, but I dream of walk-ins again someday!

We had to convert a bedroom – our closet was way too small, and our house is only 5 years old!
We are renovating our bedroom currently. We were looking for some ideas on how to redo the flooring. This has given me some inspiration. Thanks!
Author
Good luck with your renovation!
Oh wow, your closet looks amazing. I love how everything turned out. So neat!
Author

Wow! That’s an entire room! It looks larger than my son’s room. I hope you enjoy it once it is done.

You should – it’s like my own little room!
Funny I should stumble upon this post because I am in the middle of a total closet reno too! After years of putting it off and living with really small and cheap wardrobes, I had a closet framed in, an organizer installed and now just waiting for my doors- that is, once I decide on Pretty Simple or True Craft~ they will be hung like a French door and I am having mirrors installed on both on the outside- my room is small and needs all the help it can get, lol! Look forward to more updates- the flooring is beautiful!
