When we decided to buy a home with an upstairs laundry room I was so excited! The convenience of having a laundry room just a few doors down from our bedrooms seemed to be a lifesaver. It’s always been nice to not have to lug our laundry up and down the stairs.
The only time I really thought maybe it wasn’t such a perfect idea was when something awful happened – our laundry room flooded. We had the same washer and dryer since the day we moved in ten years ago, and we never had an issue until one day water was streaming through our downstairs light fixtures!
Water was gushing from our washing machine, and it wouldn’t stop – I had to turn off the water valve to finally stop the water. Our whole laundry room, upstairs hallway, and two bedrooms flooded, along with the water running through the ceiling into the garage, downstairs hallway, and it even flooded our basement.
The whole situation was overwhelming to say the least. We needed to strip the whole room down and start all over again.
We decided we needed to do a few things to make sure this wouldn’t happen again. The first thing on the agenda was to rip out the floor completely to make it water-proof and drainable in case a situation happened like this again.
The second major thing on the agenda was to choose a new washer and dryer that we could rely on.
The fun part of this process was being able to design a new laundry room from scratch! I love a good mood board, and I couldn’t wait to put this one together!
I decided I wanted to make this new space completely different from the old space. Let me show you the before photos – I took these after we completely dried out the room and removed the wet baseboards from the room. Obviously we didn’t do much at all with the space originally even though it’s pretty large, has great light, and has great potential!
Once we had the room cleaned up and ready to tear apart, our first stop was Goemans Appliances in Whitby to choose a new washer and dryer. Goemans Appliances has 8 locations across Ontario (plus a distribution centre), and they have been in Whitby for a few years now.
I did a short tour of the store on my Instagram Stories as well – you can check it out here!
The store itself has a larger selection of appliances than any other store I’ve ever been to. I’m so used to looking for an appliance and having a few options to choose from – but to have isles and isles of refrigerators to look at was incredible! I didn’t even know there were that many choices! I found myself a bit distracted looking at stoves and their display kitchens, but eventually I made my way back over to the washer and dryer section.
I was a little overwhelmed with deciding on what set of washer or dryer to go with because there were so many options, but luckily I had some help from Nima. Nima was so knowledgeable on each brand and variation of washer and dryer. He knew all kinds of facts about efficiency, volume, and all of the different colour combinations each set came in.
After going over all of my options, there were two sets that I thought would be the best fit for our family – one of them was the LG Electronics 5.2 Cu. Ft. AI Front-Load Washer and 7.4 Cu. Ft. Electric Dryer.
The dryer will actually periodically set your laundry load to tumble dry for up to 3 hours after the cycle is done to help keep your laundry wrinkle free. This is the kind of feature I would love to have because I always forget to unload my laundry when it’s done in the dryer, and I’m stuck with wrinkles.
The dryer has FlowSense™ Duct Clogging and Lint Filter Indicators so you know when to empty them, and it also has LG’s TurboSteam™ technology which generates steam instantly to reduce wrinkles and odors in just ten minutes
The ThinQ™ App also controls your laundry remotely and provides maintenance tips and alerts – my old set didn’t have any kind of technology like this!
The second set we were looking at with Nima was the Whirlpool 5.8 Cu. Ft. Front Load Washer with Quick Wash Cycle and 7.4 Cu. Ft Electric Dryer. This set was very similar in size to the LG set, but each had a few different features.
The Whirlpool dryer has a feature called Steam Refresh Cycle which takes only 22 minutes to reduce odors and get rid of wrinkles so you don’t need to rewash an item, and instead you can just refresh it!
The Whirlpool Wrinkle Shield™ feature periodically tumbles and fluffs the laundry load to help keep wrinkles from forming – you can even select “with steam’ to help smooth wrinkles.
I think the mood board I created for the room could work with either set luckily, so we just need to make a final decision on which set is the best fit for us! Nima at the Whitby Goemans Appliances was so helpful – we were very grateful to have his advice! You can meet him in the store in person, or even set up an appointment with you on the Goemans Appliances website here!
We have made quite a bit of progress since I’ve taken these photos – I can’t wait to show you where we are at along the way! I will share a final reveal post in a couple weeks, but until then I will share Instagram Stories about how the room is progressing.
I think the thing I am most excited about in this whole renovation process is our new washer and dryer. I want to be able to do laundry without worrying about the machines breaking down, and I feel like that little bit of peace of mind will go a long way for me.
We have been so happy with the help Goemans Appliances has provided us during our shopping experience! We had so many options to choose from at their store with quick delivery times. I’m so excited to show you the final reveal with the washer and dryer set we chose!
Thank you to Goemans Appliances for collaborating with us on this post.
