This post is definitely the one I’ve been the most excited to shared on the blog!
I’m so happy to finally reveal what’s been an exciting project for me – my new walk-in closet!
I’ve always been very lucky when it’s come to closet space. When I was a kid my parents gave me bedroom with a walk-in closet that was so big I probably could have slept in it. I think that’s what sparked shopping addiction as I got older. I just had to fill up that large space with clothes!
When I moved in with my soon to be hubby he was happy to help me convert a bedroom into a walk in closet for me with the help of my dad who made a custom clothing system that travelled with us to our current home.
I was ready for something new, sleek, and that would make me feel like I was shopping in a boutique every day when I was deciding what to wear. I knew that after years of having my clothing on open racks that I wanted things to be different this time. I wanted a wardrobe with doors so I could keep the room looking polished and clean, and I’ve always wanted to have a mini-closet where I could house all of my pretty shoes. I couldn’t be more happy with this room – it’s my dream closet!
To take a look at our before photos visit this post, and to take a look at our progress along the way along with some of our challenges and solutions visit this post here!
Where did we start our planning? Actually it was with the interior finishings. I knew that my closet needed to have some things that would make it elegant and sleek, and for those interior finishing items we went turned to Metrie.
One of the most stunning parts of this room are the incredible doors we installed. These Metrie Fashion Forward Doors are everything. I feel like I am in a room in Versailles when I open up my shoe closet every day! These door are solid wood, and the circular pattern on them called for some major hardware so I picked up these amazing lion head knockers to give the doors a bold look. These doors really elevate the style of this room. We used the Metrie Fashion Forward Scene II 3 1/2″ MDF Casing to surround the doors and window for the perfect finished look.
One thing I also really wanted to have was high baseboards and crown molding to help create a built-in feel to the room. These baseboards are solid oak and I love that after painting them that the grain is still visible. I can’t image the room without these Metrie Pretty Simple Scene II 5 1/4″ Oak Baseboards because they really elevate the room’s finished look.
We really thought the crown molding was essential to this room. Our wardrobe is part of the Ikea Pax Wardrobe system, but we decided they couldn’t stand alone. The needed something more to make them have a custom feel, so really I would call this part of the project an Ikea Pax Wardrobe hack of sorts!
We decided that the wardrobe system needed to have a built-in look by adding enough crown molding to have it flush with the ceiling. It was important to us that we make the wardrobe have a custom feel, and by adding this incredible molding I think we achieved that look. We used two pieces of trim to create this height of crown moulding – the Metrie Pretty Simple Scene I 2 1/2″ MDF Chair Rail and the Metrie 3 1/16″ MDF Crown [MDF Crown].
We needed some serious hardware to accompany the larger-than-life sized doors on this wardrobe, and for this we turned to The Home Depot. We had pages and pages of hardware to choose from online, but I immediately knew these Amerock 8″ Centers BRASS & STERLING Collection STERLING NICKEL FINISH Oversized Pulls were the perfect choice. They have a beautiful finish, and they were the perfect size and scale for the wardrobe. Placing an order online was so easy for these custom-order handles, and the arrived to my home in a matter of days packaged individually with care.
For our entry door to the room we decided to use the Weiser Wickham Iron Black Passage Knobs that we have used on the rest of the doors throughout our home.
Our island in the room was the only piece in this closet my husband did not have a hand in. We had RSF Woodworking and Handyman Services complete this island, and we ensured it matched the room by using the same Metrie baseboard as the rest of the room. We also had him use the Metrie Fashion Forward Scene II MDF Panel Mould for some of the detailing. An island in the room was so important to me because I needed a home-base for all of my accessories.
How gorgeous is this island? It’s absolutely stunning, and I was so happy with the final product. If you are looking for someone who can create masterpieces like this, let me know and I will send along contact details.
The gorgeous countertop was one we chose from Delray Granite and they made this part of the project difficult because they had so many styles to choose from! I knew the second I saw this one that it had to be mine, and they cut this piece to our specifications in record time with a beautiful finish.
Special thanks to my little sis Mel for letting me know that they had an amazing selection, and for helping me place my order! She was right – they had the right piece of marble I had envisioned, and it was perfect for the island.
I always wanted a grey hardwood floor in my closet, but at first I had a hard time finding what exactly I was looking for. Many of the big box stores only offer grey laminate or a hardwood that didn’t have the right thickness.
Someone mentioned to me that designers usually turn to Alexanian Carpet and Flooring, so I went to their Whitby location to see what they had to offer. I should have started there – so many different options, and I found the perfect flooring that I’m in love with.
They also had a huge assortment of rugs which could be customized, and again they had choices you couldn’t find anywhere else. This Euphoria zebra print rug was calling my name. How perfect is this rug in my closet? I easily ordered it online and had it shipped to my home (in-store pick up was available as well), and along the way any of my questions were easily answered by the Alexanian store in Whitby. They were amazing when it came to helping me plan my flooring in this room.
There is really only one kind of light for a walk-closet such as this, and that would be a chandelier. Wayfair and I are new friends, and I’m kind of obsessed with them. This chandelier arrived in a week and I couldn’t wait to see it sparkle in this room.
Wayfair had pages of chandeliers to choose from so I really had a hard time, but I think I made the right choice with this chandelier. I’ve gone back to Wayfair over and over again for décor as well for my home.
What did I need the most when it came to putting this room together? My amazing hubby who did all of this! He worked tirelessly for months on a project that I had an un-wavering vision for, and he happy accepted all of my wishes and made me the closet of my dreams. I’m really going to need to let him make a man-cave in one of the rooms in our house now as payback.
My dad was also helped us so much with working on the room, and just by being his amazing self as usual. We couldn’t have finished this project without him!
What do you think of our finished project? I love every corner of it, and I wouldn’t mind actually rolling a bed into this room and sleeping here. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined!
These amazing photographs are courtesy of Laura Clarke Photography! She did an amazing job bringing this room to life, and she was impressively knowledgeable on the subject matter (we bonded over Valentino ballet slippers). She made everything so easy for me, and I can’t wait to work with her again!
Item’s in this post may have been provided to me for review, but all opinions are fabulously my own.
It turned out even more beautiful than I imagined. I love the closets and the crown moulding. I would have no idea about all the different little details but they all add up to such a luxe look. And of course the countertop is perfect for flatlays 😉

Thank you very much!
Author
Good question! I have no idea, but I’ll ask the hubby tonight!
What shade of grey paint did you use?
Author
It’s called The Plaza by Behr I believe – I will double check!
What are the name of the doors you used on the Ikea cabinets?
Author
We used the Tyssedal Door! http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S19090251/ It was a bit sturdier than the other white door options!
This is a beautiful walk in closet. I was wondering where you bought your Lion Head Door Handles?
Author
Thank you! We actually bought them online from Lee Valley! We ordered them online, painted them, and made the doors self closing so we didn’t have to actually use them (then the paint might come off).
Beautiful closet! What IKEA piece did you purchase for the skinny decorative shelving unit and also the corner shelving unit? I’ve looked at the PAX pieces and can’t seem to find it. Thanks!
Author
You are right – they are pax! The corner unit is part of the Pax collection, and the skinny shelving unit is a matching IKEA bookshelf that we cut down to fit the corner! We almost didn’t have anything in the corner, but decided to have my husband work with a bookcase and make it fit!
Was it a Billy bookcase because it seems pretty deep. I’m looking for a similar solution to close a gap at the end of a set of pax units. Was going to modify a pax but then you have all the inside holes to deal with. Thx.
Love your closet! Just wondering how tall are your ceilings?
Author
Thank you! They are just 8ft in the room my closet is in!
