The Popcicle Trend with Graham & Brown

image

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I am now a Graham & Brown Ambassador, so I will talking about different home trends each month and how to incorporate them into your own home.

Starting next month I will be showing you how I use Graham & Brown products in my own home to give you an idea of how I have taken a trend and made it work with my personal décor.

Every year new trends in color, design and style for the home emerge, and when this happens it may make you want to redecorate your whole home, but sometimes instead it can just inspire you to refresh an area of your home.

Have you heard of the popsicle trend?

Think of it as a form of ombre – colours that fade in and out of each other, creating soft and subtle illusions. The trend is all about being playful and having fun, and since it’s the beginning of summer it’s the perfect time to experiment with it!

Graham & Brown has challenged it’s Ambassadors to show how this trend ‘Popsicle’ is echoed through our past, present and future design aspirations.

When I think of the Popsicle Trend, well I can’t help it but think about popsicles! I used love it when I was a kid and my mom would buy popsicles as a treat. Like so much that I would fight to eat the whole box. Even to this day when I am sick, I (politely) order my husband to buy a box of popsicles so I can eat them all! My absolute favourites were creamsicles and grape flavoured ones.

This “Bloom wherever you are planted” photo found here reminds me exactly of this. How pretty are all of these photos in row as well? Talking about the Popsicle Trend not only makes me hungry, but it’s also so pretty to look at when it works!

I’ve mentioned on the blog before about my love for freshening up my home each season buy adding some new pillows to my décor. Sometimes I add seasonal ones for the holidays like at Christmas, and sometimes I just want lighter or darker colours to change with the seasons.

I’ve actually just purchased 4 new pillows for my home for summer, but I really wish I had of seen this Meadow Cushion before I starting swiping my credit card!

The Meadow Cushion would be such a great way to freshen up my home, among some of the other Popsicle Trend pillows.

I have so many plans to revamp my closet, and one idea is to use one of my favourite colours – pink! I’m loving this pink paint in Carnation Street (love the name too!), and this Neon City print has such fun colours as well! I’m totally obsessed with this Polka Flock Pink wallpaper! How cute are these polka dots?

The fun colours merging into eachother to create gradual tones is a fun way to brighten up for spring. Any of these colours used in the Popsicle Trend tend to be radiant and bright, which is perfect for this time of year, and a great way to refresh your home.

Which Father should you celebrate with on Father’s Day?

image

Once I had my son there was a brand new father to celebrate on Father’s Day – my husband! This sort of created a bit of a conundrum for us on the holiday. We had my father, my husband’s father, and now my husband all sharing a holiday. Who’s day was it really to celebrate with?

I used to have an easier time on this holiday. When I was a kid, I had a great father and Father’s Day was all his. It was his day for our family to celebrate and show him how special he was with cards and gifts. When I was a teenager my parents divorced, and how I explain it to other’s is that my father got confused in the divorce and thought that you not only left your wife, but your kids as well. He moved away (to another country actually!) and slowly left our lives, and well basically left my siblings and I fatherless. Don’t worry, this isn’t a sob story about how I don’t have a father – it’s really not as bad as it sounds! Father’s Day became a little different – I really didn’t have one (exactly) anymore so there was nothing for me to celebrate on that day. It was a bit of a sore reminder of what I had lost, but in the end I made peace with it.

Fast forward to years later, and I gained a step father. I feel like step father doesn’t encompass how amazing he really is. I know everyone says this, but my (step) father is the best dad ever. There is really no one better. He always has great advice, he knows how to fix everything on the planet, he treats my brother and sister and I like we are his own, and he has created a real home with my mom that all of us kids love to go back to. I still have their house as “Home” on my caller ID. He is truly the nicest guy on the planet! Really, any of my friends who have ever met him and have spoken to him even for a short time have always commented that he is the nicest guy ever. Oh, and my son pretty much thinks he walks on water and absolutely adores his “Papa”. This person truly made up for all of the years we missed having a dad. We truly lucked out!

Father’s Day took on a new meaning when he came into my life, and then I had someone to buy that coveted Father’s Day card for, and to buy a gift for to show some appreciation for how great he was.

When I got married, there was another father I had to celebrate as well – my husbands. Husbands aren’t the greatest at handling holidays, so I would always help with picking out gifts and cards, and trying to plan visits. Now we had two father’s to take care of in one day, and things were a bit more complicated, but we made it work.

I had a baby. There was a new father! My husband is an amazing father, and he has amazed me with how he has become such great dad. This guy does everything for our son with ease and confidence, and he sometimes he even does it all better than me!

The new problem we have encountered is how do we celebrate Father’s Day with three dad’s in the mix?

I realized about a week ago that this is a bit of a problem. It’s hard to coordinate spending time with everyone on the same day, especially when there are other siblings who want to do something special as well with dad. I also realized as we were planning this all out, my husband was getting shafted. We were trying so hard to figure out what we would do with the other dad’s that we didn’t even consider that it was my husband’s day to be celebrated as well.

This year I told my husband to choose exactly how he wanted to spend Father’s Day. It could be with just my son and I, he could do something on his own, he could do something with my father, or something with his father. We could spend the day doing visits, lunches – whatever he wanted, but the choice was his first. He may be a new father, but the day is about him as well now and appreciating him. Basically I gave him first dibs on choosing how we spend Father’s Day, and we would find a way to visit with and celebrate with the other dad’s once we figured this all out.

After thinking about it, my husband decided that what he really wanted to do that day was keep things very low key and go for a day of riding his motorcycle with both of our dad’s. It’s not even because it’s Father’s Day that he wanted to do this – it’s something he truly wanted to do with the people he wanted to do it with. I think that was the most important thing I realized – I wanted my husband and brand-spanking-new-father to spend the day exactly how he wanted to. It’s just a great bonus he wanted to spend it with the other two important father’s in his life.

Review of Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara

Benefit's Roller Lash Mascara Review sparkleshinylove.com

I waited until I was completely out of my Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara before I tried Benefit’s latest addition to their mascara arsenal – Roller Lash.

I have done so many review’s on Benefit products that you may think I am a little obsessed with the brand, but they are usually spot on with their packaging and products so I can’t help myself.

Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara promises to separate, lift and curl lashes using it’s Hook ‘n’ Roll Brush. The mascara promises to hold up to 12 hours so there’s no need for a touch up.

I have been a huge fan of Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara, so I was interested to see how the two mascara’s would compare.

The first thing I noticed is the lid is a cute pink colour (and it looks like a hair roller – adorable!), so I was sure I would be getting this wand pretty dirty. I was right – at this point it’s smudged from other makeup and products that were on my hands, and it’s looking a little worse for wear right now.

I tried using this mascara with the help of my eye lash curler, and without. The best way to go is actually without the eye lash curler! Benefit’s instructions say you don’t need a lash curler, and I found it applied better and created a great curl on it’s own – there was not only no need for a lash curler, but my lashes seemed to look much better without using one.

The formula itself did lift and separate my lashes as promised. I really felt like the mascara did everything it said it would – it even lasted all day!

Here is where I ran into a problem – I found myself missing my Benefit They’re Real! Mascara for the length it would create.

Roller Lash does everything it promises to, but for me personally I missed the lengthening power that Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara seems to have.

The funny part is that when I checked Benefit’s website, they actually include a Beauty Tip on the Roller Lash Mascara page which says “For super curl AND length, apply roller lash first to curl & lift your lashes then layer They’re Real! lengthening mascara on top. It’s sexy drama beyond belief!”.

I think once I go out and grab another tube of Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara, I will be a very happy girl!

Here is a photo of me wearing Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara, photo taken by moi since there never seems to be anyone around when I need a photo of myself trying out a new mascara. What’s up with that? Any one interested in coming over to take before and after photo’s of me when I am trying new products? I can pay you in unlimited Starbucks and beauty product cast-offs!

Nautical Striped Sweaters for Summer

Nautical Striped Sweaters for Summer sparkleshinylove.com

As hot as it has been during the last few weeks, we have had some cool nights and rainy afternoon’s where it’s chilly enough to throw a light sweater on.

I’d be embarrassed to show you how many nautical striped sweaters I have in my closet. I’ve been collecting for a few years now. They never seem to go out of style! Nautical seems to have a resurgence every few years, and this year has been a great year for nautical striped sweaters.

This one I am wearing is from Joe Fresh, and it was practically free because I just added it to my grocery cart. Don’t you love how Joe Fresh is sold where you buy your groceries? My husband doesn’t look twice at the grocery bill, so a sweater here and there will fly under the radar. Well, after he reads this post I may need to be a bit more careful!

My collection of these sweaters continues to grow, and it’s really not my fault because there are so many great variations of this staple sweater. Here are more of my favourite summer nautical striped sweaters for cool summer nights and rainy afternoons below.

The Importance of a Thank You Card

Amazing thank you card roundup sparkleshinylove

The introduction of emailing, texing, and social media in general has made written notes and cards almost forgotten. Now you can send an invitation online, or ask for an RSVP via email and text, but how do you say thank you?

Most people still do it with a Facebook post or text message, but I don’t think that a proper thank you card should be forgotten!

Is’this it lovely to check your mailbox and find a written letter or card? I love receiving mail (as long as it’s not my credit card bill), and I remember that feeling when it’s time to say thank you to someone else.

Is it a bit of a painful process to look up addresses and write everything down by hand? Absolutely! The person receiving the card will know this, and appreciate the effort you went through to give them a proper thank you.

I send out thank you cards after parties where gifts are exchanged, or just in general at times when I think someone needs to be thanked in a special way.

I find the easiest thing to do is already have thank you cards on hand. I always have a stack on my desk just in case I need to send someone a quick note – it’s much easier that way!

My absolute favourites come from Rifle Paper Co! I also loved the selection I would find at Target, but since they have left Canada I tend to buy mine in boutiques, or at Chapters.

Here are a few of my favourites below – I hope it inspires you to say thank you to someone!
